The Gate Arts Centre
Beyond the Desert supported The Gate Arts Centre, a listed building in Cardiff, in securing £146,000 of Ynni Cymru funding for a low-carbon energy upgrade designed around the building’s unusual and variable occupancy patterns. The project complements an existing 22.1 kWp solar photovoltaic array installed in an earlier phase, adding battery storage and a hybrid heating solution that combines air-source heat pumps with infrared panel heating. Together, these systems provide efficient baseline warmth, responsive top-up heat where and when spaces are occupied, and better use of on-site renewable generation. This reduces carbon emissions and running costs while improving comfort, resilience and flexibility for a busy community arts, church and events venue.
Recycling centres and constrained-grid electrification
EPOCH has been used for two large recycling-centre customer projects to build updated baselines for substantial electrical load growth and to test practical decarbonisation pathways under real grid constraints. The modelling compares multiple constrained grid connections, electrification of EV fleets, major rooftop solar expansion across C&I warehouse roofs, and the prioritisation of roof areas by yield, suitability and operational value. It also assesses electrification of heat and air-conditioning in office and welfare areas, helping customers sequence investment so that PV, batteries, EV charging, heat pumps and building loads work together rather than as isolated projects.
Open energy modelling
Transparent scenario modelling and optimisation for buildings and community assets, including PV, heat, storage and tariffs. EPOCH can also be used for portfolio-level analysis, comparing multiple sites against a fixed capital budget to identify the most effective sequence of interventions. Rather than treating each building in isolation, the model can prioritise projects by carbon reduction, cost saving, deliverability, grid constraints and whole-life value. This helps organisations decide where to invest first, which combinations of PV, batteries, heat pumps, controls and fabric measures work best together, and how to phase upgrades across an estate in a way that is technically credible, financially disciplined and aligned with long-term decarbonisation goals.
